FASM Art Workshops
"I got some valuable ‘take aways’, had lots of time to paint, met other painters, and got to chat with them and see their work. Those are the reasons I go to workshops. All those things enrich my art and my life." (Carolyn Hassard, January 2024 Workshop)
There will be an Art Workshop every month from January until the end of June for each calendar year, with specific details for each one found in the listing below. All Workshops will be held on a Sunday, from 10 am to 3 pm, in The Tim Horton Studio at FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton, at 1010 Main Street East.

Please complete the Registration Form for each Workshop to make sure that you reserve a spot. If you wish to pay for more than one Workshop at once, please include a message that states which workshops (Jan, Feb, Mar, etc.).

2) by Cheque: Payable to The Fine Arts Society of Milton; please indicate which Workshop(s) it is for on the message line; mail to 820 Childs Drive, Milton, ON L9T 4J2 - be sure it arrives one week before the Workshop date to ensure your payment is received in time.

Workshop Description:
This watercolour workshop, with Bonnie Steinberg, will focus on transparent watercolour, with an emphasis on design, colour, and composition. Bonnie will use various techniques to interpret a winter landscape, including urban elements with panache! If you love colour, and want to impart its potential in winter, then this workshop is for you. Atmospheric and linear perspective will be emphasized to further its exploration. Snow, being a key feature, will also be explored for maximum results. Various techniques, new and proven, will be explored for further emphasis. A hands-on approach with demos will be sure to please!
Materials List: (NOTE: a more specific list of colours will be released closer to the date)
1) Paper: good quality 100% rag paper 140 lb and/or 300 lb (hot) smooth and cold press board if paper is in sheets, and if not, blocks are suggested
2) Brushes:
· Suggested sizes:
2" Robert Simmons white-sable-skyflow wash(*optional)
1" flat gold sable-clear hand, beveled end
#5 and #8 round gold sable
#3 or #4 rigger
#16 (½" x ½") flat gold sable(THIS IS A LIFTING BRUSH…(OPTIONAL ONLY)available from Studio Six online)
2" hake
3) A Palette (Robert E Woods or John Pike or equivalent) – scrub each paint compartment (not mixing areas) with an SOS pad to rough up the surface so that the paint will stick
4) Paints: (artist grade will give you richer colour)
· Essential minimum palette (permanent rose, cobalt blue, and aureilin yellow)
· 2 yellows, 2 reds, 2 blues
Beginners : only the three primary colours,as listed above, are essential to begin your painting class.
Please note: for more seasoned painters:
Students are always invited to bring the colours that they always use, or especially want to learn to use.
Please choose from the following colours - most painters will have most or at least some of these, so do not buy all of them, and read carefully, please. Most of these are colours I love to use, but I have marked those that are essential. Specific colours will be sent out for the specific subject with before the workshop.
• Permanent yellow lemon(holbein) or Hansa yellow medium or Light Aureolin yellow (essential)
• Raw sienna
• Opera (any brand)
• Scarlet lake
• Burnt sienna or Transparent red oxide
• Manganese blue hue
• Permanent rose (essential)
• Cerulean blue
• Cobalt blue (essential)
• Winsor blue (red shade)
• Winsor red (or green shade)
• French ultramarine blue
• Alizarin crimson (permanent)
• New gamboge or Indian yellow
• Viridian green
• Quinacridone gold
OPTIONAL Colours:
• Prussian blue
• Bright rose(holbein)
• Bright violet(holbein)
• (optional) transparent oxide red…(a transparent form of burnt sienna) m. Graham at curries or daniel smith, or qor all at curries carry this colour if you like it…!
